2007’s
Trick r’ Treat is one of the greatest love letters to halloween, and the horror genre in general, you’ve probably never seen, and the undeniable cult success of that movie finally sees director Michael Dougherty try his hand at another horror tinged holiday movie with Krampus, which sees Christmas turns terrifying for a dysfunctional family (which includes Adam Scott and Toni Collette) when the Christmas devil of german folklore comes to punish them for their misdeeds (think of him as the anti-Santa Claus. Our first look at the movie has come our way, courtesy of USA Today, and I think we can expect a trailer very soon, possibly attached to The Visit.

I absolutely adore Trick r’ Treat, so to say I’m excited for Krampus is a bit of an understatement. These first stills are very promising, especially our first, teasing look at the titular creature. A part digital/part practical creation, thanks to the combined efforts of Weta Workshop and Weta Digital (The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies), even his silhouette is terrifying. Christmas horror movies are very few and far between, but this already promises to be one of the best.
